Fixing a Broken Door Knob – Step By Step

When any of your door knobs get stripped, bent or stops working otherwise, its repair process will depend upon the type of knob system constituting it. Majority of the door knobs today aren’t any separate pieces of hardware. These knobs are incorporated into a single piece self contained latching system, making it very unlikely to repair the knob by itself. The probability is that you just might have to replace the entire knob mechanism. However, the classical mortise-tenon latch systems have separate pieces of spindles and knobs, which allow you to fix any problem relating with the knob without replacing the whole system. But fixing even the most simplest of door knobs demands some experience. Read along to fix any door knob in a step by step process.maxresdefault

Step 1

Open the door to access the knobs on both sides of the door. Next you insert a doorstop under your door to block the movement of the door. Carefully inspect the gap in the metal strip on the face of the doorjamb. If you notice any worn out areas at the edges of the openings enlist a contractor to adjust the hinges and carefully align the door. Otherwise proceed further.

Step 2

Loosen and unscrew the machine that secures the doorknob at the inside of the door. Save the screws and pull off the knobscautiously. If the head of the screws are not exposed then slightly depress a tab on the stem of the knob using a small screwdriver. Thereafter pull the knobs. Depress the spring clips holding the circular base plates and remove plates to access the screws.

Loosen and remove the alternate screws that hold the face plate of latch assembly right at the edges of the door. Now pull out the assembly steadily.

Step 4

Press and let go of the spring loaded latch slowly by hand. If it gets tough to depress the spring or if the spring doesn’t bounce back then keep it on a rag with the latch facing upwards. Thoroughly apply some lubricant in that small gap.

Step 5

Now simply depress and release the latch several times to ensure a smooth movement. When it starts operating freely, reinstall the latch assembly and door knob in the reverse order as it was removed.

  1. I’m impressed, I have to admit. Seldom do I
encounter a blog that’s equally educative and amusing,
and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The issue is something which too few men and women are speaking intelligently about.
Now i’m very happy I came across this during my hunt for something relating to this.

  2. Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon on a daily basis.
It will always be helpful to read through content from other authors and use something from other
    sites.
